December 17, 2019 by Blake Culver Leave a Comment

How often do you check your Instagram analytics? Do you know where to find them, or which ones you should be focusing on?

Instagram business account owners should check their analytics regularly since this free tool gives great insight into your business audience, interaction, engagement and activity. Analyzing your Instagram data offers similar benefits to other digital marketing analytics. Understanding the available data and how to use it will help you more efficiently plan your marketing and content strategies.

This article will give a brief overview of the five most important Instagram analytics, what they mean, and how you can improve them.

1.    How is Follower Growth Calculated in Instagram Analytics?

Found under the Audience tab of your insights page, follower growth shows how many people followed and unfollowed you in the past week. By combining these numbers, it shows your overall growth rate. For example, if over the past week 130 people followed you, but 100 unfollowed you, your growth rate is +30. Clearly, you want to always have a positive number in your follower growth rate.

Instagram only tracks the last seven days of follower growth. So you should create a simple spreadsheet to track trends across months and years. This helps  to get a better understanding of where you’re at year-over-year.

If you notice a trend of negative follower growth, take a look at your
with your interactions, content and audience demographics. You might see opportunities to better connect with your current audience. Consider what they seem to like, share, and comment on. Then adjust your content strategy accordingly.

2.       Demographics of Audience

In addition to follower growth, the Audience tab gives valuable insight into the demographics of your audience. As any good business owner will tell you, knowing the demographics of your customer/follower base is key. Instagram insights shows what percentage of your followers fall into certain age categories, their gender, and when your followers are most active on Instagram.

Understanding your demographics will help you create targeted content for your audience. For example, if you notice that a large portion of your followers are aged 18-24, you might want to create content aimed towards students and younger generations. The demographic insights can surprise you too. Your business target market might be females aged 55-65, but you discover your largest follower base is males aged 25-34. So keep an eye on your demographics, and adjust content, tone, and products accordingly.

3.       Instagram Analytics Impressions & Interactions

Under the Activity tab of Instagram Insights, you will find data about your account impressions, reach, and interactions. This data measures how many people have seen or interacted with your content on Instagram.

Impressions measure how many times your posts have been seen in the past week. Interaction is a combination of how many profile visits, website clicks, and emails your account has generated in the last week. Again, since this only measures the past week, it’s a good idea to record the data sets in a spreadsheet so you can track trends.

Your impressions and interactions reflect how well your audience reacts to the content you’re posting. If you’re posting daily, but not seeing a high number of interactions, you may want to change what time you post, or your type of content.

4.       Follower Hours/Days

At the very bottom of the Audience tab, you will find a chart outlining what days and times your followers are active on Instagram. Each day gets displayed in three-hour intervals, showing you how many of your followers are active at certain times of the day. This information will help you decide when to post to maximize interactions and impressions with your followers.

If you’re not having the reaction you hoped for on your posts, double check your audience’s usage times against your posting times.

5.       Individual Post Analytics

Under your Content tab, you will see your posts. Click “See All” if you can’t see every post.

This useful tool lets you filter by type of post, date range, and what type of interaction you want data on. For example, you could have it show you how many comments, likes, or impressions have been produced by each post in one big snapshot. This feature allows you to see exactly what your followers find engaging, and what they’re not as interested in.

This should be monitored on each new post. That way, you’ll know as soon as possible if your content strategy is performing the way you had planned.

Instagram Insights is free to use on business accounts and a marketers dream. The amount of data you get access to allows you to tailor your posts and content strategy more effectively towards your target market.

Once you understand exactly what each data point means, put them all in a simple spreadsheet. This will allow you to track trends over a longer period of time, giving you even more insight into how your Instagram account has been performing. If you haven’t checked your Instagram analytics before, take a look at them today, make a plan, and start building a more successful Instagram page.
